Scrolling your query report, you hit a row that no human typed: a quoted phrase followed by a dozen -site: exclusions, or a query ending in the word official, or an entire paragraph of instructions that reads like someone pasted a prompt into the search bar. One impression, position 8, no click.

We noticed a cluster of these in our own property's report and started reading them closely. The shapes are consistent enough to recognize on sight, and they tell you something the rest of the report cannot: which of your pages AI research tools retrieve when they go looking for sources. This post catalogs the shapes and what to do about them.

What do agent-issued queries look like?

Three shapes repeat. Each one encodes a retrieval strategy that makes sense for software and no sense for a person standing at a search box.

In our own report, these shapes appeared within days of each other and landed at strong positions, from 2 to 10, while our ordinary commercial queries sat far deeper. The sample was tiny, single-digit impressions per query, but the pattern was hard to miss.

  • Quoted terms plus exclusion chains: a phrase in quotes followed by -site:reddit.com, -site:twitter.com, and a dozen more, stripping forums and social sites from the results
  • Documentation hunts: precise feature descriptions with official or documentation appended, like a performance report metric name followed by the word official
  • Pasted prompts: full natural-language instructions, sometimes with context preambles about location or formatting, indexed as a single query string
  • Operator-heavy variants: numbered prefixes, comma-separated field lists, and other artifacts of templated query generation

Why do AI agents search Google this way?

Research agents in tools like deep-research modes decompose a user's question into many web searches, and they write those searches the way an engineer would: quoted for precision, with exclusions to skip low-authority discussion sites, and with official appended when the task is to find primary documentation.

The pasted-prompt shape is simpler: somewhere in a pipeline, a whole instruction block went into a search query field. Google served results for it anyway, and if your page appeared, your report recorded an impression.

One honest caveat: Google does not label queries by origin, so agent attribution is an inference from shape. A person can type a -site: chain. A person does not usually type twelve of them with a location preamble.

How do these queries affect your metrics?

Barely, at today's volumes, but in a recognizable pattern: impressions with no clicks. An agent reads the results page programmatically, so even a position-2 appearance rarely becomes a visit. A handful of these rows adds a small drag to CTR and contributes single-impression position data that is pure noise.

The more interesting effect is interpretive. If you treat every query as a human, a row like a pasted prompt at position 8 looks like a bizarre content opportunity. It is no such thing. Nobody will ever type that string again, and writing a page for it would be optimizing for an artifact.

How do you find agent queries in your own report?

Filter for the shapes. The Performance report's custom regex filter can match queries containing -site: chains, quoted phrases, or trailing words like official and documentation. Sort the results by impressions and you will usually find a long tail of one-impression rows.

Then look at which pages those queries land on. In our property, they overwhelmingly hit documentation-style pages: metric definitions, how-a-report-works explainers, and comparison pages. That mapping, from agent query to retrieved page, is the actionable part of the whole exercise.

Should you optimize for agent queries?

Chase the pattern, never the strings. The queries themselves are unrepeatable, but the pages they retrieve tell you what AI research tools consider citable: precise, well-structured, documentation-flavored content that answers a definitional question cleanly and cites primary sources.

Watch the boundary between retrieval and traffic honestly. An agent reading your page may inform an answer without a recorded visit, and any referral that does happen shows up in analytics as an AI source, never in Search Console. If your analytics show zero AI referrals while agent queries appear in your report, that gap is real and worth tracking over time, since being retrieved is the precondition for being cited.

Do agent impressions hurt my SEO?

There is no evidence they do. They add impressions without clicks, which slightly dilutes CTR on tiny samples, and CTR effects at that scale are negligible. Treat them as measurement noise with informational value, and keep them out of position and CTR conclusions.

Should I block AI crawlers to stop this?

Blocking crawlers would not stop it, because these are Google searches, and your pages appear through Google's ordinary index. Crawler controls like robots.txt govern direct fetching by AI companies' bots, which is a separate channel with separate tradeoffs for AI visibility.

Do agent queries mean I will get AI referral traffic?

They mean you are being retrieved, which comes first. Whether retrieval becomes citations and clicks depends on the tool and whether users follow sources. Track AI referrals in your analytics as a separate ledger, and expect impressions in Search Console to stay the larger number.

Why do these queries rank my site so highly?

The queries are extremely specific, so few pages match them well. A quoted phrase with a dozen exclusions filters out most of the web, and documentation-style queries reward precise definitional content. Positions on one-impression queries are also statistically weak, so treat the high placements as directional.
