SEO vs. GEO: What's the Difference?
SEO optimizes content to rank in a traditional list of search results that a searcher clicks through. GEO optimizes content to be extracted, summarized, and cited directly inside an AI-generated answer, often with no click at all. The two overlap heavily in practice but reward slightly different things.
Where do they overlap?
Both depend on the same floor: crawlable pages, genuine expertise, and content that actually answers the query. Neither AI Overviews nor most AI assistants maintain a separate index from standard web search, so a page invisible to Google is generally invisible to both.
Where do they diverge?
SEO rewards ranking position and measures success through clicks, since the searcher still has to visit the page to get the full answer. GEO rewards being the specific source a model chooses to quote or name, and success is measured through citations and mentions, which are far harder to track with standard analytics.
- SEO goal: rank in the results list
- GEO goal: get quoted in the generated answer
- SEO metric: clicks and position
- GEO metric: citations and mentions, mostly unmeasured today
Frequently asked questions
Do I need a separate strategy for GEO?
Not a separate strategy from the ground up. Layer GEO-specific tactics, direct answers near the top of the page, structured data, consistent facts, on top of solid existing SEO work rather than treating it as a competing discipline.
